The pavilion is built using timber from the Curonian Spit forests – wood typically chipped for biofuel or pulp in the paper industry. Over several years, the Neringa Forest Architecture collective has diverted a wide variety of this wood from this process, archiving it at Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts for material experiments, art education, and production.

The materiality and design of the Children’s Forest Pavilion respond to the geometries of timber shaped by wind and the particular soil conditions of the Curonian Spit. The playscape is crafted from custom-cut, paper-thin pieces to thick planks of black alder, mountain pines, black locust, birch, chestnut, maple, and pine.

Following its presentation in Venice, the installation ‘branched off’ into two distinct sites. One element – the roof structure – is now installed in the old-growth forest in Juodkrante, where it functions as the Neringa Forest Classroom, a destination for forest walks and environmental education workshops. Meanwhile, the play platforms, shadow play projections, and other elements are installed at Stasys Museum’s Education Space, supporting its research and learning activities led by the pavilion’s contributors and the team at the museum.

The 39m³ of timber at the core of the Neringa Forest Architecture project – gathered over a three-year cycle in a timber archive at Nida Art Colony of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (VAA NAC) – represent a fraction of the biomass regularly cut for landscape maintenance and forest management works on the Curonian Spit. This material is typically processed into wood chips and enters the biofuel market, where it is sold as biomass for combustion in centralised (district) heating plants – these facilities generate over 70% of Lithuania’s total heat supply. In the research residency programme initiated in 2020 at VAA NAC, this timber was redirected and instead became both the basis for and catalyst of a wide range of activities that unfolded over the following five years – including the development of the ‘Children’s Forest Pavilion’, Lithuania’s pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia 2023.

‘Neringa Wood Works’ functions as an activated workshop, a summer long studio dedicated to work with wood: from 14 June to 31 August, each Saturday and Sunday, the collective gemeinsam bauen wir neu – a group formed by women and queer technicians, architects and carpenters in Zurich that addresses accessibility and inclusion to professions requiring knowledge of machines and building technologies – and other contributors to the Neringa Forest Architecture project, hold workshops at VAA NAC. These sessions focus on working with wood from the Curonian Spit – reflecting both the local context and the techniques of using this wood: making the material and experimenting with it accessible to both local Neringa inhabitants and the summer guests.

The workshop space is accompanied by a timeline presenting a broad scope of experimental and playful approaches to redefining work with timber, carried out over the past five years by programme residents, contributors and student courses – ranging from research-based projects, tours and walks in the landscape and a shepherds’ artistic residency to tangible objects and image-based works. Together, these present a working model for engaging with landscape and heritage through situated, critical practice. The project approaches both as dynamic fields – shaped by historical processes, administrative frameworks and lived experience – and addresses them as spaces where cultural work can be attentive, responsive and materially grounded.

Every way of seeing Lithuania’s green garment is shaped by its own optics – filtered through the observer’s interests and conditioned by an entire sequence of instruments and methodologies. ‘Forest Atlas’ is a process-based exhibition that invites visitors to enter the density of the forest at its centre – without beginning or end – into a constellation of prints assembled by aligning a diversity of forest images. The pictures, photographs, diagrams and maps presented in ‘Forest Atlas’ cartograph publicly available spatial data, revealing territorial changes, tracing the preparation and circulation of timber, and mapping the networks of production and technological innovation within the timber industry.

The notion of sustainability – now deeply embedded in cultural language to describe both products and the renewable resources used to produce them – arose historically from operations carried out in forest spaces. It is linked to the efficient cyclicality of felling and planting, and to the exploitation of forest territories designed to produce predictable, renewable timber stocks. Methods and tools developed to measure trees and compute their volume gradually reshaped our perception of forest habitats: to harvest timber more efficiently, forests were schematised, simplified, and reduced to numerical tables. Wetlands were drained, tree density thinned, creating the most favourable conditions for the strongest, straightest trees. In the process, the ability to see the forest as a long-formed, impenetrable, biodiversity-rich space was eroded. Today, this vision is being reconstructed – driven by ecological concern and a growing cultural shift that calls for the expanded protection of forest areas and the preservation of diverse ecosystems to support adaptation to climate heating.

The forest is a place of tension – shaped by competing interests, seen through culturally conditioned lenses. ‘Forest Atlas’ is dedicated to sensing forms of knowledge and imagination that link diverse disciplines, opening a fragmented overview of the relationships at work in forest futurity.

‘Forest Atlas’ opened on Saturday, 14 June,At the same time, in another forest and another cultural institution – Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts – the ‘Neringa Wood Works’ began, led by the resident carpenters’ collective gemeinsam bauen wir neu, the accompanying exhibition features work created by participants in the Neringa Forest Architecture project since 2020.

NERINGA FOREST CLASSROOM

Neringa Forest Architecture collective, in collaboration with the Neringa Municipality Educational Cluster, the Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts, the Curonian Spit National Park, and the Old Growth Forest Foundation, is conducting an educational program at the Neringa Forest Classroom built in Juodkrantė’s old‑growth forest near the dendrological path. It is continuation of the Children’s Forest Pavilion, which represented Lithuania at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale 2023. Constructed entirely from Curonian Spit timber, the pavilion was conceived as an educational playscape, with the intent of relocating it to the Neringa forests as a publicly accessible installation. The classroom serves as a site for ecological and cultural education, welcoming all who wish to explore and learn from the surrounding forest landscape.

Forest Continuum Workbook is composed of multilayered stories, workshops, and activities created in collaboration with local children in the Kainuu area of Finland. It has grown from a series of workshops held by members of the Mustarinda Association in the notably large but threatened areas of old-growth forest in the northern boreal zone. As part of the Neringa Municipality initiative to promote the development of an Educational Cluster that connects Neringa Gymnasium with art and cultural organisations in the Neringa and Klaipėda regions, Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts, in collaboration with the Curonian Spit National Park and the Old Growth Forest Foundation, is conducting the first series of outdoor educational activities. This programme focuses on exploring the dynamics of ecosystems within the forests, coastal areas, and sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, with a strong emphasis on biodiversity and understanding human impacts on nature.

This educational programme brings together teachers from Neringa Gymnasium, environmental educators, botanists, mycologists, and artists in a cross-sectoral initiative that encourages experiential learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. By connecting natural sciences and the arts, the programme provides students and participants with a holistic perspective on environmental stewardship, fostering a deeper understanding of the local landscape and its delicate ecological relationships.

The programme begins with a session led by Curonian Spit National Park educator Gvidas Laukaitis. Over the course of four days, from 21 to 24 October, students from four classes in grades 1–4 engage in outdoor explorations to learn about the unique formation of the sand dunes that define the Curonian Spit. They study the varying sizes and characteristics of sand grains, observing how natural forces shape the dunes over time. Through extensive guided walks and practical exercises such as building a model of the protective dune using sand and natural materials, the pupils experience the dunes up close, gaining an understanding of their meaning to the local ecosystem and how they interact with surrounding flora and fauna. 

From 25 to 29 November, Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts hosts a session focused on understanding the delicate ecological processes within an old-growth forest, led by Sengirės Fondas experts: mycologist Aurelija Pluke and botanist Vilma Gudynienė. These sessions take place within the forest and are joined by artist Aistė Ambrazevičiūtė, who guides participants in translating and deepening their forest experiences by exploring the intricate forms and representations of slime moulds and lichens on a molecular scale, revealing a spectrum of unique colours and forms and allowing participants to observe and appreciate the hidden complexity of these forest organisms, transforming scientific exploration into an artistic lens on biodiversity. 

Their work is supported by the environmental educator Riita (Nyyskä) Nykänen from Mustarinda Association in Finland. Nyyskä develops learning materials and introduces new approaches to outdoor environmental education supporting learning in nature, proposing teachers with new tools and strategies for engaging students with their natural surroundings.

The outdoor programme is centered around the Neringa Forest Classroom, a structure with a roof and seating platforms nestled within Juodkrantė’s old-growth forest, along the dendrological path near the ‘Sound Catcher’ installation. This classroom serves as both a continuation and the final phase of the Children’s Forest Pavilion, initially presented as Lithuania’s pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2023. Constructed entirely from timber sourced from the Curonian Spit, the pavilion was originally designed as an educational playscape for the biennale, with the aim of relocating it to the Neringa forests as a permanent, publicly accessible installation. This transformation allows the classroom to continue its purpose as a site for ecological and cultural education, welcoming all who wish to explore and learn from the surrounding natural landscape.

During the five days of environmental workshops, the Neringa Forest Classroom – whose structure subtly blends with the fragile forest landscape – acts as a starting and gathering point, a natural landmark from which pupils can embark on exercises that deepen their engagement with the ecosystem, immersing them in the very environment they are learning about.

Elements that can be freely assembled to create interconnectable structures; wood samples collected from private monoculture plantations, experimental forests, private and state-managed mixed forests; materials from industrial timber production processes. These are just some of the ‘forest parts’ which, in this exhibition by the Neringa Forest Architecture collective, provide tactile links to the stories, processes and practices that have shaped and continue to shape the Landes de Gascogne forests. 

This vast wooded area is a mosaic of practices determined not only by the imperatives of maritime pine monoculture but also by the practices of care for its biodiversity. Conceived as a playscape, this exhibition is an invitation to the forest. Beginning with a film documenting outdoor workshops held in the forests of Lithuania and Finland, it unfolds through a Shadow Play animated by projections, a Samples Play for interacting with wooden elements, and a Timeline tracing both the history and the future of this complex ecosystem.

The exhibition includes workshops and educational activities for school groups, organising visits to forests and industrial sites which are rarely accessed by the public. These visits allow young people to experience different forestry and timber production practices and participate in discussions about the possible futures of woodland areas.

PARTS OF THE PLAYSCAPE

Samples Play is an open-ended game where players of all ages interact with an assembly of wood elements, guided by their own imagination and intentions. Each sample can also be read and decoded by linking it to its origin—whether to the specific forest and habitat where the tree grew or the process that transformed it into a timber product. The accompanying texts provide an overview and introduction to these sources:

Shadow Play is an enclosed space animated by the play of shadows created from various plants, lichens, and mushrooms: impressions on transparent film derived from the plates of the Léon Dufour Herbarium preserved at the Bordeaux Botanical Garden, X-ray images of maritime pine (Pin maritime) samples intended for dendrochronology (the analysis of events experienced by a tree throughout its lifetime) from the research of L. Bouffier and F. Lagane at the joint INRAE/University of Bordeaux Biogeco research unit, as well as plant and other organism samples collected during various visits to the Landes de Gascogne forests. Visitors are invited to bring their own “forest findings” to create new shadows.

Chronology traces the main events and forces that have historically shaped the Landes de Gascogne forest, while also possibly overseeing the future.

This publication serves as a photographic document and proposal to preserve Jonas Prapuolenis’ (1900–1980) hand-built Studio in which he designed and produced most of his work over a remarkable and inventive career. The Studio sits on a nearly century-old site in the Žaliakalnis neighbourhood of Kaunas alongside Prapuolenis’ home and surrounding garden, which continue to be cared for by his son, Bangutis Prapuolenis. 

Jonas Prapuolenis was a designer, artist, and educator who interpreted the textures and qualities of local timber, and its particular, unique structures and patterns shaped by the local climate and terrain and translated its geometries into artistic furniture pieces.

Photographs by Rasa Juškevičiūtė capture fragments of the studio building enveloped by a fruit tree garden, and document and reveal evidence of Jonas Prapuolenis’ practice and knowledge – design and craft processes that can be read through singular pieces of furniture stored inside the crumbling wooden structure of the workshop; his material storage and showroom filled with seasoned raw, rough timber pieces; unfinished design components; sketches on paper; bone and amber ornaments; and fine particles of dust accumulated through time. 

Alongside the photographs, an inserted notebook holds contributions written by Kotryna Lingienė and Aistė Dičkalnytė, which study the history of the Studio and offer a wider perspective of Prapuolenis’ life and intentions. Their words unravel layers of slow time and the singular way Prapuolenis worked with materials while reflecting on folkloristic themes and modernist design, the meaning of such heritage and the importance of preserving the Studio.

Jonas Prapuolenis’ homestead, his family home (built in 1925) and the Studio (built in 1936) have been included in the Immovable Property Heritage Register of the Republic of Lithuania since 2011, however, significant wear of the structural elements, roofing and cladding of the Studio require further material protection and measures of conservation to preserve this heritage as a specific inseparable whole.

The Neringa Forest Architecture started by diverting timber extracted in the Curonian Spit forest initially designated for biofuel and built a Natural Timber Seasoning Shed at the Nida Art Colony (NAC) of Vilnius Academy of Arts in Nida in 2020, it serves as an archive, documenting timber samples, a resource storage and public display of forest histories and planning. 

This local timber resource became the basis of an artistic research residency program at NAC that involves architects, artists, researchers, and journalists. The assembly promotes a wider understanding of the forest environment, by tracing its extractivist industrial practices and processes and their impact on biodiversity. Engagement is seeking wider public awareness and agency to influence decisions in contemporary forest.

Neringa Forest Architecture seeks to enhance the ways society negotiates and understands the forest long-term. The project explores the balance between forest industries and biodiversity in the forest space through research and collaborations with cultural practices. It investigates the cultural landscape of the Curonian Spit forests as a case study in the context of the wider region, considering the entanglement of ecologies, representations, colonial and industrial narratives.

From timber collected over three years, NFA built and curated The Children’s Forest Pavilion, Lithuania at the International Architecture Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia 2023 the installation composed as an educational playscape and conceived to acknowledge the unique approaches of children to observe, draw conclusions, explain the forest,  and understanding that we are part of it. 

Currently Neringa Forest Architecture partners with Dutch Art Institute DAI Roaming Academy, MA in Art Praxis and leads COOP study group FOREST IS LONG_TERM. And later this year NFA will present a new project at arc en rêve centre d’architecture in Bordeaux as part of Season of Lithuania in France 2024.

Timber Archive

Neringa Forest Architecture collects all types of timber that is annually logged on the Curonian Spit and usually used for biofuel. As part of the project, this timber is appropriated from its usual cycle and brought to Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts, where it is cut into planks and stored in a shed specially constructed for natural seasoning as a display of analogue data / an archive / a document / a material memory / an imprint of the landscape / a public display. This material is also a resource for project participants, artists-in-residence, and students working in the timber workshop of the Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts.

The CHILDREN’S FOREST PAVILION built from this particular timber was transported to Venice before its return to the Curonian Spit at the conclusion of the Architecture Biennale 2023.

During the closing week of the Biennale Architettura, the Children’s Forest Pavilion hosts a screening of short film essays produced as part of the semester project “The Political Ecology of the Spit” lead by Prof. Dr. Ines Weizman and Christina Condak at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

High sand dunes, pine forests and ‘climate holiday’ resort towns characterise the Curonian Spit on the Baltic Sea coast shared by what is now Russia and Lithuania. However, the pristine appearance of this narrow landscape hides a deep history of human intervention that politicised nature by adding monuments and milestones, gardens, roads and border crossings, and even altering almost completely the geological and biological makeup of its terrain. In the late 19th century, when the area became part of Prussia / the German Empire, an enormous forest cultivation project was undertaken to colonise the land, but also to tame the dynamics of moving dunes and sand-storms. During the First World War, the famous High Dunes of the Spit were even used as military training targets for bombardment from the sea. Tragically, Second World War histories and present-day border hostilities relating to the war on Ukraine, including the intimidation of migrants across the Baltic region, connect. 

The semester project “The Political Ecology of the Spit” investigated the impact that the contestation of national borders through military occupations and changing political regimes has had on a vital, yet vulnerable, ecosystem that uniquely interconnects the cultural history and forms of habitation in the Baltic region. It aimed to explore and narrate unique histories entangled in a dynamic landscape of forests, dunes, agriculture, architecture and artistic colonies. At the core of the studio was an excursion to the Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts in the Curonian Spit National Park in Lithuania (March 2023). The studio involved archival and media research, documentation, film making and mapping that were presented in a project exhibition that included research scripts, and short documentary film essays.

-This first issue of * as a journal, focuses on Forest. Forest as a constructed space unavoidably reliant on human actions, no longer nature, but infrastructure; an environment of natural systems governed, exploited, and regulated by human interventions, technologies, industries, institutions and agencies. How can cultural practices enhance the optics through which society senses a forest?

The former natural habitats that defined the Baltic region (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) – the forests and wetlands – were terraformed to become silviculture plantations, arable land and urban structures through  waves of colonisation. Most of the recent attempts to break away from linear infrastructural dependencies that were conceived in the years of Soviet central planning into rhizomatic networks of interdependencies of the European Project are reflected in material flows, policies, territories and continuities of practices shaped by the overlay of these two modernities. Subsequent investments in the timber industry, technological advances, the restructuring of forestry and scientific institutions, the deregulation across national borders and the global climate disaster insist on an urgent need for cultural practices to re-assemble images and concepts in order to reconstitute an understanding of the forest as a vital and central infrastructure. 

During the winter and spring Covid-19 lockdown of 2020 and 2021 we worked with the Neringa Forest Architecture programme (curated together with Egija Inzule), residents at Nida Art Colony , as well as a diverse group of others dispersed across wide geographies to translate the forest into a journal. The diverse ecologies of voices echo each other and form an assembly of photography, cartography, design, research, artistic work into a publication that may be conceptually compared to an optical device dedicated to reflect on the ways to be in, and with a forest. 

Following his visit to Nida, Preila and Juodkrantė last year Jochen Lempert responded with a selection of Neringa forest photographs. Jonas Žakaitis conversed with Nene Tsuboi and Tuomas Toivonen about their Kulttuurisauna routines, the synthesis of sound, and culture in relation to natural systems. Sofia Lemos unfolded the sonicity of labour and forests on the move, reflecting upon the histories of timber rafting down the river Daugava in her writing about Currents; a large scale art installation and performance piece by Lina Lapelytė and Mantas Petraitis. We interviewed Cooking Sections (Daniel Fernández Pascual and Alon Schwabe) about dispossession that becomes increasingly common through the protection of natural environments and the right of trees not to be offsetted by prescribing them a value to compensate for the guilt of CO2 emissions made far away. Gabrielė Grigorjeva wrote about the conceptualisation of forest time, its definitions and spatial categorisation. Jonathan Lovekin and David Grandorge contributed photographs from their series Infra depicting Baltic forests and wetlands carved out for peat extraction, stacked in piles of logs and shredded into biomass. Signe Pelne explained the mechanisms of biofuel, carbon sequestration and subsidisation. Mindaugas Survila and Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė discussed how the meanings of forest are formed through their respective documentary film editing processes. With her baby, Agata Marzecova walked the forests around Nida contemplating the diverse landscapes and ecologies of care. Amelia Groom discussed the ‘symbiogenesis’ of lichens to reflect relationality in the artwork and soundtrack Songs From The Compost by Eglė Budvytytė. Aistė Ambrazevičiūtė revealed her creative process in synthesising lichen architectonics in her digitally generated architectural images. We conversed with Laura Garbštienė and Onutė Grigaitė about ways of being and living in woodlands, weaving and dyeing with plants, reading the roots of a plant, and the concealed relationships we are losing due to extensive logging and those we might save if we can learn about  species by responsibly exploring forest habitats currently closed due to environmental protection regulations. Rasa Juškevičiūtė photographed and Kotryna Lingienė wrote about the studio and translation of timber into exquisite furniture by Jonas Prapuolenis whose career spanned the larger part of twentieth century and became a design classic. Monika Janulevičiūtė carved intricate furniture pieces while reflecting on the simplest and modest yet authentic typologies of resourceful furnitures found in photographs of homes advertised on real estate websites. Together with Egija Inzule we wrote about the timber cycle that became the basis to initiate the Neringa Forest Architecture research and artistic residency programme at NAC we are curating together. To reflect the topic of this issue, Graphic designer Gailė Pranckūnaitė created a special typographical layer as intervention into the set template of the Journal. Virginija Januškevičiūtė introduced the photographer Algirdas Šeškus’ return to painting – for which he painted a forest.

* Initiated by the  Lithuanian Culture Institute, each issue of this biannual magazine encourages the co-creation and research of topics valuable to both local and global readers, and features a different focus word in its title, relating to the topic chosen by the invited curators/editors of that issue.

This book is a walk through the mind and imagination of lichens spread across the forest. The short stories tell of lichen love, their mathematics, values and other important things. These compound creatures are never alone and know great ways to make friends. Perhaps that’s why, when looking at lichens, people understood what symbiosis is – knowing how to live together. Composed of allied fungus and algae, these creatures have special powers – for example, they can easily survive in space and melt rocks. And this one particularly special lichen, Graphis scripta, was even called the script of the forest.

Children’s Forest Pavilion
Lithuania at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition –
La Biennale di Venezia 2023

The Children’s Forest Pavilion is composed as a playscape and conceived to acknowledge the unique approaches of children to observe, draw conclusions, explain the forest, and demand agency in forming it. This project brings together works and findings developed in parallel to outdoor activities held with children in woodlands in Lithuania and Finland. Guided by environmental educators, activists, artists, architects, and foresters, they were introduced to think of forests as negotiated spaces where no single actor has a central stake.

Located directly opposite the entrance to the Arsenale, the pavilion’s installation is both an architectural object and a conceptual structure, meandering through a Venetian patio house, and allowing different formats of discussion, interaction and play. It is made out of timber from trees on the Curonian Spit that have, over several years, been collected in an archive at Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts as part of the project Neringa Forest Architecture. Combined with film installations, worktables and play structures, the architectural elements in the pavilion support the research and learning environment of the exhibition, which shows how the children that participated learned about ancient forests, primordial swamp landscapes and long processes of geological formations.

Through the outdoor activities, the children explored the forest at various levels of scale and perception, looking at the growth patterns of lichens, investigating chemical pollution molecules through augmented reality, and discovering sounds from reverberations of ancient and living timber, among other things. The exhibition includes an alphabet made of the branches of hundred-year-old mountain pines, a space with supersized shadows, as well as computer-generated spores and slime moulds in a myriad of shapes and forms, and invites visitors to play and learn about forests, as architectural and infrastructural spaces: environments of natural systems governed, exploited, and regulated by human interventions, technologies, industries, institutions and agencies, but also places of depleting biodiversity.

The Children’s Forest Pavilion is conceived as an educational tool with the potential to ‘branch off’ and connect to other spatial and thematic elements. At the end of the Biennale Architettura 2023, it will return to the woodlands of the Curonian Spit where it will function as a destination for forest walks and environmental education workshops. The pavilion is organised by the Neringa Forest Architecture project that was initiated in 2020 to reflect on the agency of cultural practices and institutions in framing environmental relationships. The project has its starting point in Nida Art Colony, a subdivision of Vilnius Academy of Arts, located in the Lithuanian part of the Curonian Spit. As a continuous programme, Neringa Forest Architecture involves a growing assembly of collaborations and participants to read the cultural landscape of the area from multiple perspectives and practices as a case study in the context of the forests of the region.

This event is a part of the public programme supporting A Fragile Correspondence, a collateral event of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, created by the Architecture Fringe, -ism magazine and /other.

Expanding on the themes of architecture, land, landscape and language common to both A Fragile Correspondence and Dualchas’s presentation in the Arsenale as well as many other presentations at this year’s Exhibition, the event creates a space for dialogue between a range of different projects – all united through their interest in architecture as a social, cultural and political activity. This dialogue asks how a closer reading of land and landscape can help architecture adapt to the changing world of the climate emergency, an evolving profession, and a recalibration of what it means to practice architecture.

Through an afternoon of talks, panel discussions and debates, with a diverse range of speakers, these ideas will be explored from multiple perspectives across La Biennale. We will also be paying a visit to the Lithuanian Pavilion as part of the programmed event. The afternoon will end with some light refreshments.

A conversation by curatorial teams of the Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, and Austrian pavilions moderated by Aurora Fonda will share experiences in developing and implementing their unique projects for the 18th Biennale Architettura. With a specific focus and attention to Venice – how each developed authentic sensibility towards the locality of the historic city and its challenges while being related through the main topic of this year’s Biennale – The Laboratory of the Future. 

Their diverse propositions will be discussed as possibly mutually complementary projects that could be read as specific case studies of response to the different contexts of the urban structure of the Venice microcosm. A direct comparison of these visions offers a moment for a dialogue on possible continuities for the knowledge and relations that have been developed throughout this process.

This conversations is part of the Pavilion Days that are planned as a moment to share ideas and concepts behind the national exhibitions and aim to strengthen the international architectural network. The Pavilion Days are an initiative of the Global Commissioners Group, in which various national pavilions actively participate. Additionally to a joint programme there will be different events, seminars, tours, talks, and inspiring encounters during 14th and 15th September. The Children’s Forest Pavilion – the Lithuanian pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia will opens its doors to the local community and all visitors for a work-in-progress preview in Nida. The project will be introduced by the curators Jurga Daubaraitė, Egija Inzule and Jonas Žukauskas, along with other contributors and members of the team.
